Funny- Ha Ha Ha By Megan Oniki

March 29, 2019 - 2019 Operation: Sapna

India makes me laugh.  I love the goats and cows in the middle of the road.  I love the girl who never takes off her hot pink sunglasses at my school. I love the three-point turn we make on the edge of a cliff every morning on the way to school.  I love how I subconsciously start talking to the kids in their accent. I love the burn/tan line I got from my watch.  I love the kids begging me to choose them in games: “Dee Dee puhleaseee!”  It just makes me happy.

One of the lessons I teach is on adjectives.  I teach them words like scary, big, round, etc and have them act it out.  When they act out the word “funny” they laugh the most fake laughs ever.  I try to point out instances that are funny so they can make real-world connections about what it means.  So something funny will happen and I’ll say “see, that’s funny!” And they’ll just go “funny—ha ha ha” in the most forced way ever.  Ah man it makes me laugh.

I just love it here.  It is such a happy beautiful place full of happy beautiful people.  The girls from the middle school next door drew pictures of us and gave them to us today.  It was darling.  A boy from our school gave me a handful of crushed almonds which took me a long time to get because I thought he was just trying to give me knuckles—gotta love that language barrier!  So yeah, India is the coolest!  Things are going well!

  1. Love your positive and humourus thoughts Megan! You fit right in, in India, ‘a happy beautiful place full of happy beautiful people.’

  2. Love hearing from you Meg! It sounds like you are having the experience you dreamed of having which makes me so happy. Take pictures of the girl in the hot pink sunglasses. I want to know her better. I love you!

PS. Your housing is taken care of. All is well.

  3. Pretty sure that wearing sunglasses at school is some form of seniority in India. There was a kid at one of my schools that wore sunglasses all the time. He sure knew that he was the coolest one there. haha

  4. Megan! You are awesome! I love that you are seeing the small wonderful things to make people happy! love you!
