The Teenagers in India Love Shawn Too By: Clara Larsen

November 23, 2019 - 2019: Operation Parivar

When we were eating lunch earlier today we figured out that we have been gone 9 days, I seriously cannot believe that. It feels like it’s only been 2 days! I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun. It makes me so sad that we are leaving in a week I cannot even comprehend it because it makes me so sad. I really don’t want to leave. It’s Saturday today and we went to a school for our cultural exchange. The school was kids from grades kindergarten to 12th grade. For the first bit we got to talk to the older kids that were around our age and they asked us questions and we asked them questions. It was super cool to learn more about what they study in school and what the like to do in their free time. Lili and I were talking to two girls about what music they like and the first thing they said was “we love Shawn Mendes!” And of course I

was all about that and was so excited that they said that so I showed them my picture of Shawn and I and some videos from the concert. They kept saying “I’m so jealous” and “you’re so damn lucky” I was dead it was so funny. Then more kids started asking me about Shawn and we all bonded over him and how we all love him. It was really awesome. I especially loved it since our group sometimes gets annoyed or teases me about loving Shawn so much so it was so fun to talk to kids my age who love him (even the boys love him too hahah).

During the performance part, they Indian kids sang and danced for us it was so awesome! A girl sang “Roar” by Katy Perry and it was so good! (mom I think that you would have loved it). Then a boy who was the “head boy” of the school sang “See You Again” by Charlie Puth and he was super awesome too. Also I forgot to mention this but about an hour before we left for the cultural exchange the leaders wanted us to have more performances so they asked if I would do a dance solo. I was a little embarrassed to do it but I told them I would. So I hurried and went over HDC’s opener dance and decided to do the chorus and senior/officer part. So when it was our time to perform we sang “Let it Grow” from the “Lorax” and then I performed my dance. It was kind of scary because there were so many people but I went out there and did it. Unfortunately the music kind of went out a little bit through it but I just kept going. After I danced we all sang “Jump Right in” and then we did our dance to “September” and we wore our tie dye shirts and hippie glasses. Then the girls sang “Can’t Help Falling in Love” then we all snag “One Day” and after that the boys had a little surprise for Ashley because it’s her birthday today! It was super cute they got all the kids in the audience to sing happy birthday to her. After the cultural exchange we went to the market and we all got some goodies.

On another note we only have one full day left teaching at our school and I’m so sad about it. I love these kids so much they make me so so happy. I have loved getting to see them warm up to us and see their personalities shine this past week. I cannot imagine not seeing them after Monday. It makes me sad that I haven’t seen their cute faces today and won’t see them until Monday. On Wednesday I taught “feelings and emotions”. It was so fun! We had an egg hunt and in side the eggs were pictures of faces with different emotions and when they opened them up they had act that emotion out. It was a good day. On Thursday I taught manners and behaviors and we had a little tea party and had crystal light and cheese its. It was the cutest thing watching the kids react to the water changing color when I poured the crystal light powder in their cups. It was such a fun lesson. After teaching we got to paint a mural at our school. It turned out so good it is so so cute and so colorful it reminds me of a Dr. Suse book. It was so fun to paint with my team I’m so happy how it turned out. Friday was little crazy all the kids have gotten really comfortable with us which is good but also bad because they want to play and act crazy, instead of wanting to learn and listen while we teach them. I taught colors on Friday and I had this toy called bunchables which are super fun because they are like velcro and you can make super cool things with them but if they get in hair they get super stuck. So I had to really enforce that they could not go in their hair. Unfortunately 2 kids got them in their hair and I had to rip them out I felt so bad. The kids were seriously so crazy but it was still such a fun day. But I’m seriously having the best time ever! But I hope everyone is doing well back at home and I love and miss you guys!
