And That’s a Wrap By: Zoe Brusa

Humans are so beautiful when they’re full of love; this trip has taught me that, and so much more. I’m writing this with a heavy heart, after bidding farewell to my sweet students, children, and lifelong friends. I will be the first to say that I have never been good at goodbyes, and today was so exception. Upon arriving at the school, the inevitable departure on my mind, I felt a sense of peace, yet consuming sadness. Brooke and Al have reminded us everyday to remain present, living in and loving the moment. Let me tell you- it is so much harder said than done in moments like this.

I had anticipated this since day one, but my most difficult and taxing goodbye was to my quiet, calm, intelligent, and gracious nine year old, Kashish. Kashish caught my attention early on, and I was drawn to her instantly. I will miss her “I love you”s and “Zoe best friend”s every day. I wrote her a note and read it to her this afternoon, and we cried happy tears together, as she wiped my face saying, “no sad, happy!”. I know this sounds like a sad post, but truly today was one of the most rewarding days, when I realized how lucky I am to have been given this opportunity to travel and to love.

Now, as we drive away, a steady stream of tears pours down my cheeks; I am overwhelmed with gratitude, happiness, uncertainty, joy, and completeness. I wish nothing more than success and happiness for my sweet babies, but am saddened by the reality that I will never know what will come of their lives. I’m optimistic that they will continue to study hard, live happily, and love deeply. They possess so much potential for success, and I pray that their futures hold nothing but love. My wish is that they never forget how loved they are, and that they can greet everyone they meet with the love they shared with us.

Every time my mom and I say goodbye, she tells me KSI. For years, she has told me “you are kind, you are smart, you are important”. When we spent three weeks in Africa, I told my students that every day. Here in India, I have done the same. I constantly remind my gentle babies that they are kind, smart, and so very important. I hope if I have taught them anything, it is to never forget their endless worth, and to forever instill in others a sense of importance and belonging. My spirited group of 37 has completely stolen my heart, and will forever remind me what it means to be selfless, patient, thankful, and positive. My heart is flooding with love and I hope you can feel the love I am sending you all. Can’t wait to squeeze you soon, KSI.
