Happy Easter from Jibhi!
Another beautiful day in the Himalayas!  Imagine a sunny day in the Tetons, except higher, more rugged, steeper mountains, and no paved roads.  We drove up one of those roads today and spent the afternoon at a Hindu shrine located on top of a mountain, surrounded by the local people who were also enjoying the beautiful weather.  The priest blessed each of us with good luck and health.  Afterward, we sat in a circle and shared some of the great experiences we’ve had, as well as the lessons we’ve learned from the children and from each other.  The teens expressed themselves very well and I can see how much they have all grown in just the past week.  As a parent myself, I can once again say that their parents should be very proud.

It’s hard to believe that we’ll be leaving in a couple of days.  The time has flown by for me and I’ve had an exceptional time that I wouldn’t have missed.  I encourage any medical person to think about participating.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s no vacation – the accommodations are pretty rustic (though I’m told better than in prior years) and most days the work is exhausting.   However, the satisfaction from helping these children, as well as providing education to midwives and other caregivers in the area will stay with me forever.  After finishing the child examinations on Friday, I discovered a line of other villagers outside of the school waiting to see the visiting doctor.  The need is tremendous and even in the short time we are here we are making a difference.

On this holiday when many families are together, I want to say how grateful I am for my beautiful wife and incredible children.  I miss my children very much but know they recognize the importance of providing service.  My son has been to India twice with YMAD and is the reason my wife came as an adult leader last year and has come back with me this year.  My daughter Carly will be coming in the November and I’m certain my other daughters and son-in-law will also be part of this great organization.  I’m particularly grateful that Susan could be with me during this life-changing experience.  We will share these memories forever.

Take care and see you all next week.
