Tears, Honesty, and a whole lot of Smiles! By Ellie Scharman

At Operation Azadi’s most recent meeting on August 5th, we had three incredible Ted Talks given by Alanis, Emmy, and one of our team leaders, Jens! Alanis talked about how pictures on social media often only show the very best parts of people’s lives and have usually been edited to appear “more beautiful”. She also spoke about how there are so many things that are more important than the way we look. Many people believe that looks are everything, but they are not. The words we speak, the books we read, and the way we act are all more important than how we look. Emmy delivered her talk next. She explained how fear can be beneficial to us. There are two sides of us that can be characterized as the artistic side, which encourages us to go out and try new things, and the scientific side which can bring up those doubts and fears that we have about trying new things. This fear, though it may seem to get in the way sometimes, can give us wisdom, insight, and truth. Our very last Ted Talk was given by Jens. He spoke about two books, Outliers and Chaos, and gave each of us a copy of Outliers to read! Jens spoke about how studies have been done to show that there is no correlation between IQ and success. What makes people successful has more to do with the work that they put into what they do rather than raw talent. If you put in the work and focus on your goals, you can become great at anything. Jens also taught us about how what we do has an impact on others and how we are the seed of many profound and infinite fractals. Even small gestures can have an immense impact on those around us.

The second half of our meeting was filled with tears, honesty, and a whole lot of smiles! Brooke and Allison asked each of us to share something that we were worried about in regards to our team and our upcoming trip to India. We all spoke very openly with each other and got a lot out of the way. After voicing our worries with the team, the leaders left us to work through all of the problems we had brought up, and come up with ways to solve them. We worked as a team, got a lot closer, and got super excited for the retreat this weekend!
