I’ve Left My Heart in India by Kylee Rassmussen

November 27, 2018 - 2018 Operation Bandhu

I’ve left my heart in India.

It sunk to the bottom of the green ponds that reflect the trees, between the ripples made by children playing.

I left it beating to the rhythm of Bengali music that blasts from the TATA’s as they speed down the busy, narrow, streets.

It’s sprinkled over endless fields of growing rice — baking in the winter heat.

I left it surrounded by the smog that fills the air, formed from dirt and smoke and curry.

It soaked into the henna I drew and it’s woven into thick, black, braids of the girls who taught me how to do it.

I left it in the hands of women who love unconditionally and more fully than anyone I’ve ever known,

I left my heart in India… But it’s in safe keeping.
